**Overview** At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget. Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus. The National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solutions to take on complex, real-world threats to our nation and the world. The Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Technologies Division, within the National Security Directorate, works across fundamental science, research and development, and operations to counter emerging national security threats. We focus on discovering signatures and understanding threats by creating materials, methods, and technologies to detect and analyze them. Our researchers deliver the solutions necessary for addressing complex mission challenges, such as explosives detection, biological threat detection, chemical and nuclear forensics, and special nuclear materials. The Nuclear Engineering group within PNNL is seeking post-masters research associate with experience analyzing the economic, industrial, and geopolitical effects of small modular reactors. The successful candidate will have a strong technical background and understanding of problems in nuclear nonproliferation. Research, work experience, or coursework in government policy is desired. The candidate will be part of the Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Division. Our mission includes the science, technology, and operational expertise to neutralize emerging national security threads. **Responsibilities** In this role, the key responsibilities of the successful candidate will be: + Work with Project Managers and sponsors and serve as a technical advisor capable of informing policy positions in nuclear diplomacy, + Provide information on the interaction between new (fourth generation) reactor designs and non-proliferation policy, + Identify physical measurement techniques with relevance to specific safeguards applications for nuclear reactors, + Recommend innovative designs and strategies that can be applied to meet project goals, + Author technical white papers, technical documentation, and journal articles to clearly communicate technical topics, + Maintain effective working relationships with project engineers, project managers, government sponsors, and external organizations to facilitate collaborative solution-finding to complex problems in a developing technical field, + Clearly communicate technical topics (in writing and in person) to an audience with limited technical background. + Ability to understand high-level strategic implications of new technologies with implications for security strategy and cooperation. This position may require occasional travel to project sponsors as well as international travel in support of sponsor missions. It will also require engineering and policy work on non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as required by the assigned project topics. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States. **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: + Candidates must have received a Master's degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications: + Candidates must have completed a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from an accredited college or university + Prior experience at a U.S. National Laboratory and/or U.S. Department of State **Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment** Not applicable. **Additional Information** This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
